MEDIA RELEASE/Aussie Driver Search AUSSIE DRIVER SEARCH SIGNS WITH 2XF1 WORLD CHAMPION MAURICIO GUGELMIN TO ASSESS AUSSIE DRIVERS Aussie Driver Search (ADS) is pleased to announce the appointment of two-time Formula 1 driver, Mauricio Gugelmin, as their official driver evaluate and monitor. Mauricio brings a wealth of racing experience to ADS, and will be closely involved in assessing, developing and monitoring the progress of all initiates. Mauricio began his racing career in Formula Ford Brazil in 1984 and by 1986 had won the National Championship. 1988 saw him crowned Formula 3000 Champion and in 1989 he first experienced F1 with the Leyton House team. He participated in the F1 World Championship between 1989 and 1999 making 68 starts. During this time, he achieved 8 podium finishes with his best result being a third-place in the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix. Between 1995 and 1997, Mauricio drove for PacWest Racing, a CART Team. This team was owned by Bruce McCaw, Paul Gentilozzi, and Rick Wesslund. Mauricio worked with drivers such as Mark Blundell, Willy T. Ribbs and later Jimmy Vasser, Gil de Ferran, Jason Leffler and Keith Wiggins. His experience in CART was quite successful, in his first year finishing 8th in points in the Championship. The following year, 1996, he finished 4th, and in 1997 finished 5th. Mauricio raced sports cars in 2000 and 2001 before retiring at the end of 2001. In 2004, he took a sabbatical and returned to racing as sporting director and coach for the Minardi F1 Team. Aussie Driver Search has been fortunate to have attracted such a broad and deep experience base with Mauricio Gugelmin. ADS plans to develop and evaluate a number of drivers for for Australian race teams. “Having Mauricio as our official driver monitor is a huge win for ADS,” said Stephen Fraser, founder of Aussie Driver Search. “He brings sage counsel, respected racing experience and great credentials within the race industry and we are very fortunate to have the benefit of leveraging his wealth of experience. “Mauricio will be very involved in helping us to identify and develop some of the best talent in Australia. His insights and experience will be instrumental in us achieving our vision.” Mauricio joins FIA Formula 2 race winner, Johnny Cecotto Jr., as Team Drivers and mentors. ADS will hold regional and state-based ‘try outs’ throughout the Eastern seaboard of Australia in 2018 leading to the announcement of successful drivers who will then partake in a series of in-car assessments by Johnny and Mauricio during the first quarter of 2019. This will be pre-empted by a shortlist of drivers from the regional and state try outs that will attend the ADS Performance Evaluation at the Norwell Motorplex in South-East Queensland in February 2019 to further assist in driver selection. From there a small number of drivers will be chosen and put forward for assessment and selection by race teams in various categories including Supercars, IndyCar and Formula 1 support categories.
