They are escaping from the hectic city life, making their way to a large stone gates located in the heart of Illsan-Myeon, Gyeonggi Province. This is Bukchon, one of the last remaining pockets of old Seoul; a culturally significant area of alleys lined with traditional Korean hanok houses. Here, over 1,000 of the hilly area's 800-year-old nooks and crannies remain untouched, unlike much of the city's remodeled streets and complexes. The area is a popular spot for a variety of activities, including tasting traditional Korean food, enjoying the architecture and discovering local Korean shops in alleys. Though it's attracting increasing attention from visitors and camera crews from around the world, Bukchon still offers visitors a journey filled with traditional Korean culture and vibes. "I feel something missing in the modernization or urbanization of Seoul," said Hwang, 65. "It connects me to my roots and I feel nostalgic when I am here. I come here for a weekend walk, before or after a trip in Seoul." Traditional hanok To better protect its traditional cultural space and landscapes, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has designated Bukchon as a conservation zone and restricted new construction in the area since 1990. Traditional hanok houses, which are nearly 600 years old, still exist in Bukchon along with the Roving Park, a popular area to fully immerse in hanok culture. The Roving Park is a complex built from the mimicry of hanok construction and the architecture of traditional Korean villages, located where the Bukchon Hansik Street used to exist. Once visitors enter the park, they feel a sense of historic nostalgia with the utensils and settings from the Joseon era, and a changing exhibition space displaying traditional art. The park has numerous, short-term activities that visitors can take part in, such as traditional doll-making and celadon writing. About 100 meters away, visitors can explore the traditional Korean food complex, "Samcheongdong Suji's," located in the heart of Bukchon. The area offers a wide variety of eateries which specialize in traditional Korean food, while retaining many of the original building structures, tying Bukchon's unique and sentimental atmosphere together. Hwang has visited the area many times, each time impressed by the unique architecture of the traditional Korean hanoks. "It is really nice to be able to retain the original design of the hanoks even after hundreds of years, it has been around since the Joseon Dynasty and it is amazing how it's still being used in this day and age," said Hwang. The gradual improve of the stories of families living in the area is something locals praise, instead of tearing down the old homes the local officials are pushing forward with preserving the architecture, embracing both the old and the new. The area is also home to a variety of craft shops that are well-known in the vicinity and offer traditional crafts, woodcraft, pottery and food. A number of cafes also offer a vintage atmosphere where visitors can escape the hustle and bustle of the city, while taking in the traditional Korean vibes. The tradition and culture housed in this small part of Seoul is the combined efforts of many different individuals who have come together to make sure the stories and vibes are properly preserved. The Korea Heritage Conservation Agency, an organization dedicated to the preservation of traditional culture and its transformation into modern civilization, is working to contribute to the preservation and diverse use of cultural heritage. The agency has opened up hanoks to citizens since 2004 and has since been promoting various hanok activities. "Hotels with hanok structure are increasing in number and some of them offer very attractive packages, including hanbok rental classes, to make it easier for visitors to feel the hanok culture and lifestyle," said an official from the agency. Apart from the traditional vibes, Bukchon also is a hidden gem for those who want to catch a glimpse of the modern culture of Seoul. Last month, the second edition of Yaujaemi, a series of events from Bukchon, was held with the aim of introducing different forms of art to the public. It featured several exhibitions, lectures and exhibitions about contemporary art.
